Luftgekuhlt is the most popular Porsche celebration short of Rennsport Reunion. So far there have been nine of them here in the US and a few more in other countries. Organized by American Porsche racer and two-time Le Mans winner Patrick Long and his friend, Southern California creative director Howie Idelson, the gatherings are a celebration of all flat sixes (and fours) air-cooled (thus the name). This means all your favorite 911s and 356s as well as the usual smattering of very cool race cars.

This Luft was held at the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif.

"Mare Island has seen it all, from canvas to coal, oil to nuclear power, sailing ships to submarines, and now, Porsche," read the release.

Our friend Alan Galbraith, founder of Billetproof car shows and the fabulous Concours d’LeMons, was there, filming the airy activities for his new production company, The BeSpoke Life. Check out his video above—and get ready for more. We hear he'll be offering videos of other cool car shows to come.

Mark Vaughn
Mark Vaughn grew up in a Ford family and spent many hours holding a trouble light over a straight-six miraculously fed by a single-barrel carburetor while his father cursed Ford, all its products and everyone who ever worked there. This was his introduction to objective automotive criticism. He started writing for City News Service in Los Angeles, then moved to Europe and became editor of a car magazine called, creatively, Auto. He decided Auto should cover Formula 1, sports prototypes and touring cars—no one stopped him! From there he interviewed with Autoweek at the 1989 Frankfurt motor show and has been with us ever since.
