Rotating seats can help passengers get in and out of vehicles easier and have been part of automotive interior design for decades. These range from seats that simply swing away to help folks get in and out of cars, to seats that fully rotate backward to help chat with your friends or hold a small conference on the highway. Well, the folks at Kia have looked at this creative seating solution and implemented it on the upcoming EV9.
While Kia still hasn’t released the full details about its three-row battery-electric crossover, the company has finally shown the world what it’s going to be like in school pickup lanes across the country. The exterior styling strongly resembles the concept that debuted in 2022, though it does eschew some of the concept car’s more adventurous features. Even though the reverse-opening rear doors didn’t make it to the production line, the EV9’s interior is almost as interesting.
The interior might be an even bigger departure from the concept than exterior styling, but the folks at Kia turned a pedestrian people mover into a conversation piece. In front of the driver, you’ll see standard fare: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster flanked by a 12.3-inch touch screen. In the second row are captain’s chairs that can swivel 180 degrees to allow in-person meetings with those in the third row while you’re waiting for the EV9 to charge. Naturally, the rear two rows can fold flat and give you ample space to help a friend move. Kia says the EV9 can accommodate six or seven occupants.
The automaker hasn’t released performance details for the EV9 yet, but that should be coming soon. The EV9 will ride on parent company Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform, which currently underpins the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, as well as the Kia EV6. That means you should expect to see similar performance numbers out of this supersized three-row people mover.
