Kia showed off its EV9 concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show nearly two years ago. This concept’s wild styling has been lightly tamed in its transition to a production-ready vehicle, but its size seems to have stuck. Ahead of the full reveal of its EV9, the folks at Kia are teasing the upcoming three-row BEV to whet battery-electric fans’ appetites before its full styling reveal on March 15.
While the teaser above does a great job of hiding the EV9, it’s clearly going to look a little different than the concept. The teaser, for instance, shows electronically retracting door handles while the concept had no door handles at all. The production EV9 also has traditional side mirrors, unlike the camera mirrors seen on the concept. Finally, you can almost expect traditional rear doors on the production version, instead of the reverse-opening doors on the concept.
This teaser also shows the main design language is making its way to the production version, as are the thin headlamps and signature lighting. The teaser shines a light on the sharp creases in the EV9’s bodywork, which helped make the concept car so striking. As for the interior, the teaser videos aren’t shedding any light.
We’re expecting more details about the EV9’s hardware this month. Kia is holding out the important details like battery size, range, and power levels until the end of the month, when the EV9 makes its world debut. Though, if the EV6 is a sign of what Kia expects out of its EVs, you can almost count on a top-flight EV9 to have around 300 miles of range with a sizable battery and a big power figure from its all-wheel-drive variant. Both the EV9 and EV6 will ride on the same modular architecture.
