These Are the Safest Used Cars for Teens, IIHS Says

Teen drivers are four times more likely to crash, but safe, reliable, and affordable used models are out there.

Sending a new driver out on the road can be nerve-wracking, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is here to help. Releasing its annual list of affordable, safe vehicles for teens has gotten harder in recent years as a result of rising prices, the Institute says, but there are a few criteria that it refuses to compromise on. And topping the list is a lower horsepower figure and a medium size, as these attributes will minimize the potential for serious injury.

Specific technical safety systems also help these vehicles stand out, as all IIHS recommendations feature standard electronic stability control, good ratings in four or more IIHS crash tests (original moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraints), and a certified dry braking distance of less than 145 feet from 60 mph. Those are some extremely particular criteria, but also ones that will help keep your teen driver safe on slippery surfaces, during emergency stops, and in a potential crash. After all, teenagers are nearly four times more likely to crash than older drivers, according to the IIHS.

But not everyone can afford a new car these days, and the merits of equipping a newly licensed driver with a brand-new car are up for debate as well. Sometimes a used car is even better, as it can teach new drivers the importance of maintenance and potentially improve driver focus as well. Either way, the IIHS is committed to recommending used cars ranging from $6600 up to $20,000 for teens, with over a dozen cars to choose from in total.

2014-2020 Mazda3

the 2014 mazda 3 is a total revamp of its predecessor
Mazda

Even though the IIHS doesn't recommend small cars for newer drivers, a few compact models were included in the agency's list, and the Mazda3 is one of the best. When it was completely re-designed for its third generation in 2014, just about everything went right. From Mazda's Skyactiv-based chassis and both 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines to the suave exterior styling, the Mazda3 provides enough fun (including a decent row-your-own 6-speed gearbox) and top safety marks, too. Expect to pay around $9000 for a late model.

2014 Kia Soul

Kia

Despite its slight tendency to roll over, the Kia Soul still makes it onto this list due to its reliability and decent crash test results. With the choice between two GDI four-cylinder engines (a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter), the Soul isn't known for moving very quickly either, but what it lacks in power it makes up for in personality. Surprisingly, the Soul is somewhat fun to drive and its unique, boxy styling is more often enjoyed by younger generations. Additionally, in a sort of Mini Cooper paradox, the Soul is actually roomy inside, too. And you can get one for a mere $6600.

2014-2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid

Ford

You won't be doing your child any cool-factor favors if you get them a Ford C-Max, but the cash savings in fuel costs might compensate for it. With a combined 39 mpg of fuel burn according to the EPA, the C-Max Hybrid is a fantastic choice for those with long commutes, after-school soccer practices, or road trip desires. And it received top marks from the IIHS from 2014-2016, adding to its parental appeal. Better yet, the average price for a C-Max hovers around $10,000 these days.

2013+ Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is a tried-and-true model with a long reliability and enthusiast appeal history. And the 21st-century Corolla has stayed true to its roots, offering economical transportation with a dash of fun, particularly in hatchback form. It has also received the nod of approval from the IIHS since 2013, making it one of the few small cars appearing on this list. Best of all, you can still get a manual transmission Corolla in 2023. Average prices sit around $10,000.

2018 Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid

Kia

Introduced in 2017, the Kia Niro splits the difference between a hatchback and a station wagon, offering consumers the best of both worlds. But storage space isn't the only appeal of the Niro, as it delivers 26 miles of all-electric range and 46 mpg, according to the EPA. Despite its measly 1.6-liter four-cylinder powertrain, the Niro is a great choice for cost-conscious, cargo-carrying teens. That said, the Niro is a newer nameplate, resulting in a higher $18,000 average used price point.

2013 Chevrolet Volt

A mere 38 miles of electric range may not seem like much now, but the Chevrolet Volt—as a plug-in hybrid or, as General Motors calls it, an extended-range EV—successfully built on the legacy of mild-hybrid hatchbacks like the Toyota Prius. With a 16.5-kWh battery and a total of 344 miles of gas-hybrid range, the Volt is another great choice for those wanting to dive into electric vehicles with a range failsafe. And the average price of $10,300 doesn't hurt either.

2013-2021 Subaru Legacy

Subaru

That's not a typo. Subaru's Legacy sedan has been a top IIHS safety pick for nearly a decade now. And it's no surprise either, as Subaru continues to emphasize safety features for those inside and outside of their cars. But the Legacy represents a broader choice for teens, as the model spans multiple flat-four engine configurations and interior trim choices. Subaru's symmetrical AWD is also a must-have for new drivers in slippery winter climates. And the Legacy won't break the bank either, coming in at an average cost of $7800.

2013+ Honda Accord

Honda

Midsize sedans characterize this list, but the Accord is perhaps the most iconic. With deep roots in the US and a fantastic safety track record, the IIHS recommends any Accord from 2013 and up for teenage drivers. With four- and six-cylinder powertrains as well as two- and four-door options, the Accord gives teens a bit more choice in the buying process while also promising a clean bill of reliability to their parents. Kelley Blue Book says the average transaction price for Accords across this vintage is $10,300, but we've seen late models for much less than that.

2014-2018 Mazda6

Mazda

Like the Honda Accord, the Mazda6 has some history in the US market. Launched in 2002, the midsize sedan has been continuously praised for its lively handling characteristics and punchy engine options. And these third-generation models are no exception, with two choices of 2.5-liter inline-fours and a spiffy interior setup. Mazda ceased production of the Mazda6 in 2021, but that might help buyers get a better deal, as the average sale price for a used Mazda6 is around $10,000.

10

2015+ Toyota Avalon

Toyota

The Toyota Avalon is one of two premium sedans on this list and its merits are well known. With a history of smooth six-cylinder engines, refined ride quality, and simple controls, the Avalon may not be the most exciting model but it's certainly reliable. And while the nameplate has been discontinued, prior generations of Avalon remain relatively affordable, with an average transaction price of $11,700.

2013-2015 Audi A6

Audi

This is one of the priciest choices on the list, but the Audi A6 gets as close to true luxury as teenage drivers can or maybe should have. With turbocharged four-cylinder and supercharged six-cylinder powertrains, it's worth noting that an A6 will require a lighter foot, though its docile handling dynamics will keep even more aggressive drivers on the road. And depreciation is your friend here, with average costs hovering around $11,000.

12

2015-2018 Subaru Outback

Subaru

It's not surprising to see more Subarus on this list, and the Outback is a particularly great car for outdoorsy teens. With symmetrical AWD and a torquey flat-four engine configuration, the Outback represents a capable but easy-going quasi-wagon for the whole family to enjoy, too. And high production numbers mean getting an Outback shouldn't be too hard, with average prices set around $12,000.

2014 Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai

Hyundai's Tucson is an odd choice in a sea of admittedly better crossovers, but it's worth its weight in gold when it comes to value. With two economical four-cylinder powertrains (2.0-liter and 2.4-liter) as well as ample cargo space, the Tucson is a genuinely good choice for first-time buyers. Its tall, stylish shape also helps it appeal to younger audiences, though its average price tag of $8500 is a big incentive as well.

2015+ Honda CR-V

the 2015 honda cr v was one of our most popular car reviews of the week if not the most exciting one
honda

Tried and true, the CR-V is an unshakeable part of the American roadway ecosystem. And for good reason, as it's comfortable, spacious, and appropriately powered. Always relying on a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, the CR-V isn't too quick, but it will suffice for everything up to mud puddles. Produced in abundance, used CR-V prices average around $12,000.

2013+ Toyota RAV4

If you can pick up a RAV4, you're bound to have a reliable vehicle on your hands. Due to the RAV4's extreme popularity, getting a new RAV4 has proved tricky in the last few years, but securing one on the used market shouldn't be as difficult. A 2.5-liter inline-four is the common thread through both generations of RAV4 recommended by the IIHS, though the styling does change drastically for the 2019 model year. Average used prices are set around $16,000, indicating demand for RAV4s remains strong.

16

2014+ Mazda CX-5

Mazda

Crossovers are the rage these days and the Mazda CX-5 is a relative newcomer, at least when pitted against the CR-V and RAV4. But that doesn't make it any less worthy, as Mazda's midsize crossover continues to perform well in IIHS testing dating back to 2014. Employing a 2.5-liter inline-four, the CX-5 is known for competitive power and a smooth ride. And picking one up shouldn't break the bank, as average used prices rest around $12,000.

2015+ Nissan Murano

2015 nissan murano
Nissan

Nissan's Murano isn't the prettiest car to look at, but it does keep its occupants particularly safe. Model years 2015 and up receive top marks from the IIHS and a quick 3.5-liter V6 is standard, making it powerful and safe. Nissan has used continuously variable transmissions for years now, and the accompanying transmission drone is an attribute to consider. That said, the Murano makes its budget mark, as average prices sit around $12,500.

18

2013+ Acura RDX

2016 acura rdx
Acura

Few luxury brands made it onto this list for obvious reasons, but Acura has always toed the line between opulence and attainability. And a late-model RDX could be the perfect choice for someone with a taste for leather and mid-aughts infotainment. Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 for late models and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four for new versions, the RDX punches above most of these choices from a refinement and power standpoint, but it will cost you. Average used prices are around $19,000.

2014+ Toyota Highlander

the 2014 toyota highlander begins the third generation of the suv
toyota

Just like the RAV4, the Highlander nameplate has been successful for Toyota. Originally released in 2000, the Highlander has grown significantly and features a multitude of powertrain options, from burly V6s to 2.4-liter turbocharged fours. It's one of the larger models on this list and one of two choices with third-row seating, meaning this could be a great choice for a teen with a big family or lots of friends. Either way, expect to pay around $14,500 for a used example.

20

2015-2020 Toyota Sienna

2015 toyota sienna
Toyota

Minivans have been unfairly stigmatized as uncool mom-mobiles when they're really the best way to move a group of people around. And minivans often drive better than their SUV counterparts too. Toyota's Sienna is no exception to this rule, with a punchy V6 and direct but soft steering. Even with nearly 300 hp, the Sienna isn't going to be a rocket ship for your teen, with 4500 pounds of curb weight behind it. Average used prices are set around $16,000.
