• Is Nissan preparing to launch a battery-electric crossover under the Skyline banner?
  • Japan's Best Car has heard mixed reports about this project 2025 reveal.
  • If the Skyline crossover BEV launches, it will likely use the same CMF-EV platform that underpins the Nissan Aryia (pictured above).

Nissan’s beloved Skyline nameplate might get another bite at the proverbial apple. Once home to the storied GT-R badge, Nissan’s Skyline has become, effectively, Infiniti-badged products in the United States. The most recent Skyline sedan was essentially an Infiniti Q50. During its long life, the Skyline nameplate was also spun off as the appropriately named Skyline Crossover. While that variant of the Skyline is left in the history books, the Skyline crossover is reportedly slated for a return.

Japan’s Best Car suggests Nissan is planning to launch a battery-electric crossover sporting the Skyline nameplate. Now, this wouldn’t be the first time a company has leaned on its legacy nameplates for a crossover or even a battery-electric crossover. According to Best Car, Nissan will relaunch the Skyline on the Aria’s CMF-EV platform and could be limited to just the dual-motor e-4orce powertrain.

Fortunately for Skyline fans, Best Car notes that it’s received mixed information on the future of the Skyline. Though, the BEV crossover relaunch of the Skyline would follow a prevailing industry trend. Ford’s Mustang Mach-E could work as a model for Nissan to roll out a revised version of its performance icon. Best Car also notes a Skyline probably won’t reach the US, although such a vehicle might come to the United States wearing an Infiniti badge.

Whatever happens with Skyline, it shouldn’t affect the GT-R. Of course, the current R35-generation of Nissan’s Godzilla is only getting older but has seen various refreshes. Still, you can almost expect the next-gen GT-R to sport turbochargers and a gas tank, while Nissan charts the Skyline’s battery-electric path ahead.
